Wall light panels are the defining aesthetic of modern gaming rooms. Two products dominate the category: Nanoleaf Shapes and Govee Glide Hexagon. Their prices currently sit within £25 of each other, which changes the value case from what it used to be. Here is which one belongs on your wall.
Build Quality: The Price Difference Explained
Nanoleaf Shapes feel premium. The panels are thick, the plastic is matte and fingerprint-resistant, the light diffusion is perfectly even. Govee Glide Hexagons feel lighter, thinner, and slightly cheaper. The light diffusion is less uniform — you can see individual LEDs at maximum brightness through the diffuser if you look closely.
On a wall, from three metres away, you cannot tell which is which. Up close, the Nanoleaf panels look like the pricier product. Given current UK pricing, they are actually the cheaper one.
Smart Features: Matter vs Wi-Fi
Nanoleaf Shapes support Thread and Matter — they connect locally to any Matter controller without cloud dependency. Govee Glide Hexagons use Wi-Fi and require the Govee cloud for voice control. If you run a local-first smart home with Home Assistant or Homey Pro, Nanoleaf integrates seamlessly. Govee requires an internet connection.
Price: Availability Changes the Picture
Govee sells two versions of this panel. The standard Glide Hexa lists around £111 — but at the time of writing, UK stock shows a 6-to-7-month dispatch delay, effectively unavailable. The Glide Hexa Pro, the version actually in stock, costs £199.38. Nanoleaf Shapes' 9-panel starter kit is £174.
For panels you can actually buy today, Nanoleaf is now the cheaper option by roughly £25 — the opposite of the price gap this comparison used to have. On camera, where gaming room panels matter most, they still look functionally identical.
Verdict
Buy Nanoleaf Shapes (£174) — premium build quality, Matter/Thread support, local smart home integration, and, at current UK pricing, the lower price too. Buy Govee Glide Hexagon Pro (£199.38) only if you specifically want Govee's app ecosystem or already run other Govee devices — it no longer has a price advantage over Nanoleaf.
