Part two โ that legal door only opens for a small, named list of devices, and most plug-in solar kits currently marketed in the UK aren't on it yet. What changed and why
Before 27 August 2026, the position was simple and strict: any equipment that generates electricity and connects to a UK home's mains wiring required installation by a qualified electrician, plus certification under the MCS scheme, before it could be connected at all. That rule didn't distinguish between a 4kW rooftop array and a single panel in a back garden โ generation-to-mains was generation-to-mains, and it needed a certified installer. It's part of why "plug-in solar" existed in Germany and other EU countries years before it was legal to plug one in here; people bought the hardware for use abroad, or left it switched off, because connecting it without an electrician put them in breach of wiring regulations.
Statutory Instrument SI 2026/848 changes that, but narrowly. It came into force on 27 August 2026 across England, Scotland and Wales and creates a specific, interim carve-out: small plug-in solar kits that meet a defined technical specification, with a microinverter that has passed a formal type test, no longer need an electrician or MCS certification to be connected. It's not a blanket deregulation of home generation โ it's a tightly scoped exception for one narrow category of low-power kit.

The technical conditions of the exemption
The interim rule only covers kits within specific limits. If a kit falls outside any of these, it falls back under the pre-27-August rules and needs an electrician and MCS certification like any other generation equipment.
- 800W AC output cap. The microinverter's output to the socket is capped at 800W, regardless of how much DC power the panels upstream can generate. If your panels can produce more than that, the inverter clips the excess โ it simply doesn't let more than 800W AC out the plug.
- 2,000W DC panel cap. The combined rating of the solar panels feeding into the microinverter can't exceed 2,000W. You can run more panel wattage than the AC output because of clipping, but there's a ceiling on the DC side too.
- No batteries. Battery storage is explicitly excluded from this interim rule. A plug-in kit with an integrated or add-on battery doesn't qualify, no matter how small.
- Anti-islanding protection is mandatory. The microinverter must detect a mains outage and kill its output instantly, so the plug pins are never live when the wall socket isn't receiving grid power. - The socket should sit on an RCD/RCBO-protected circuit. Most modern UK consumer units already provide this, but it's worth checking, especially in older properties. The two legal duties after you plug in
Getting a compliant kit and plugging it in correctly isn't the end of your obligations โ there are two administrative steps you're legally required to complete afterwards, and neither is optional.
1. Register the device at myplugin.solar. A straightforward online registration โ you log the device against your address so there's a record of what's connected where.
2. Submit a G98 notification to your DNO within 28 days. Your DNO (Distribution Network Operator โ the company that owns and runs the physical electricity network in your area, distinct from your energy supplier) needs to know a generation device has been connected. This is a short online form, not a permission-seeking application โ you're not waiting for approval to plug the kit in, you're notifying the network operator after the fact, within the 28-day window. Under the initial rules, this is limited to one device per household.
Skipping either step takes you outside the terms of the exemption itself. DNOs use G98 notifications to track small-scale generation on their local grid, which matters for network safety and capacity planning even at 800W a time.
The catch nobody markets loudly: legal to sell isn't legal to plug in
This is the part that trips people up, and it's arguably the single most important thing in this whole article: a plug-in solar kit being legally sold in a UK shop or marketplace tells you nothing about whether it's legal to connect to your mains socket. Those are two separate tests. Retail sale is governed by general consumer product rules. Connection to the mains is governed by SI 2026/848, and its test is specific: is this exact microinverter model listed "Compliant" on the ENA G98 Type Test Register?
As of the register's status in the days immediately following the rule change (26โ28 August 2026), only eight devices carry that "Compliant" listing: seven kits from UKSOL Ltd, plus the Perlight PowerPlug MAX 465. Everything else currently sold or marketed as "plug-in solar" โ including kits from EcoFlow, Anker, TSUNESS, FoxESS, Octopus Energy's FoxESS-based filing, Segen and Modular Solar โ is listed "Non-compliant." That word doesn't mean the device failed a safety test. It means the manufacturer's testing and paperwork with the ENA isn't finished. Until that listing flips to "Compliant," plugging one of those devices in is not lawful under the exemption, even though the retailer selling it to you has done nothing wrong.

What isn't currently legal is connecting either to a UK wall socket under the SI 2026/848 exemption, because their listings on the ENA register are "Non-compliant" at the time of writing. Permission vs certification: what renters and leaseholders still need
SI 2026/848 removes a regulatory requirement โ the need for an electrician and MCS certification. It does not touch a completely separate requirement: your landlord's or freeholder's permission to physically fit anything to the building or its exterior, or to plug a device in permanently in a rented home.
If you rent your home or hold a leasehold flat, you still need to check your tenancy agreement or lease before mounting a panel on a balcony rail, a wall bracket or a windowsill. The law change doesn't override what your landlord or freeholder has separately agreed with you. Homeowners in England generally benefit from Permitted Development rights for a simple panel mount on their own property, meaning planning permission usually isn't required for a modest, ground- or wall-mounted plug-in kit. That position can differ for listed buildings, conservation areas, and flats, where additional consent may be needed regardless of the plug-in exemption. What's still explicitly not allowed
Worth being blunt about the boundaries of this exemption, since they're easy to miss in the excitement of "no electrician needed":
